I was bored. I had new yarn and new knitting needles, in the mood to create. So I came up with this. It's a very simple little scarf/shawl.
Lines alternating between stockinette stitch and moss stich, with dainty holes along the edge give it a whimsical, yet sensible look. Loosely tied around your neck, it is perfect for Fall or Spring, or snug underneath your coat gives the perfect balance of comfort and style. Lightweight, yet still warm.
A repeating pattern that is easy to remember, gives you the brain power to easily watch (or read!) something and knit at the same time!

Yarn
Approximately 330 yards, 1.7oz fingering weight yarn
Suggested Yarn: Loops & Threads Woolike (Fingering/4 ply 85% Acrlyic 15 % Nylon; 678 yards/100 grams). Photographed in Teal Lake
Needles
Size US 4/3.5mm Straight or Circular knitting needles long enough to hold 102 stitches
Final Measurements
(Blocked) 41in/104.14cm across, 25in/63.5cm on the side, and 14 1/2in/36.83cm down.

Repeat rows 7 and 8 four more times plus 7 one more time for eleven rows of stockinette and a total of 17 rows.
Row 18 - K2, P2, *YO, P2tog* repeat from * to * till last 3 or 4 sts (see Note 1), P to last 2 sts, K2
Row 19 - K2, YO, K to end
Row 20 - K2, *K1, P1* (see Note 2) repeat from * to * till last 2 sts, K2
Row 21 - K2, YO, *Knit the Purls, Purl the Knits* (see Note 3) repeat from * to * till last 2 sts, K2
Repeat rows 20 and 21 four more times plus 20 one more time for eleven rows of Moss stitch.
Row 31 - K2, YO, K2, *YO, K2tog* repeat from * to * till last 3 or 4 sts (see Note 1), K to last 2 sts, K2
Row 32 - K2, P to last 2 sts, K2
Repeat rows 7 - 32 till there are a total of 15 stripes. You should end on a stockinette stripe and repeat rows 18 and 19 to complete the holes.
Decrease rows:
Row 1 - K2, YO, K3tog, K to end
Row 2 - K2, P to last 2 sts, K2
Repeat rows 1 and 2 four more times plus row 1 one more time for a total of eleven rows of stockinette.
Row 12 - K2, P2, *YO, P2tog* repeat from * to * till last 3 or 4 sts (see Note 1), K2
Row 13 - K2, YO, K3tog, K to end
Row 14 - K2, *K1, P1* to last 2 sts (see Note 2), K2
Row 15 - K2, YO, K3tog (see Note 3), *Knit the Purls, Purl the Knits* (see Note 2) repeat from * to * till last 2 sts, K2
Repeat rows 14 and 15 four more times plus 14 one more time for a total of eleven rows of Moss stitch.
Row 25 - K2, YO, K3tog, K1 *YO, K2tog* repeat from * to * till last 3 or 4 sts (see Note 1), K to end
Row 26 - K2, P to last 2 sts, K2
Repeat these 26 rows till there are 15 decrease stripes. So there are 30 stripes in total. You should end on a stockinette stripe. Do not repeat rows 12 and 13 for the last stockinette stripe.
Finishing up:
Row 1 - K across
Row 2 - K2, YO, K3tog, K to end
Row 3 - K across
Row 4 - K2, YO, K3tog, K to end
Row 5 and 6 - K across
Bind off. Weave in ends. I recommend blocking, it makes a big difference.
Notes:
(Note 1) The amount of stitches will change between 3 and 4 stitches. That is OK. We are increasing every other row so each row will change. Just make sure you are ending on a K2tog (or P2tog) when you are doing the *YO, K2tog*.
(Note 2) It doesn't matter if you do not end on the specified 'P1'. The amount of stitches is changing so it is right if you end with P1 or K1.
(Note 3) This suggestion is barely perceptible, but if you are a perfectionist you might want to do it. After you 'K2, YO', count 3 stitches on your left needle. If the 3rd stitch is a P, go ahead and K3tog and continue the pattern. But if the 3rd stitch is a K, P3tog (instead of K3tog) and continue the pattern. It just adds a tiny touch (and I also find P3tog a little easier than K3tog, I'm not sure why, since I usually despise purling!).
